The winter of 1988 was a season of new beginnings for paleontology in the scenic Comox Valley and for the Courtenay Museum. Even though professional paleontologists and geologists had surveyed Vancouver Island many times throughout the past 125 years, it was the efforts of two local amateurs that would bring the region to the attention of the world with the discovery of the first Elasmosaur recorded in British Columbia - the first of its kind west of the Canadian Rockies.
